科罗拉多州原为阿拉帕霍、切廷内和犹他等部族印第安人居住地。

许多地名为印第安语弗德台地国家公园中的崖洞是古代印第安普埃布洛人社区的遗址。至今仍有大约9000印第安人住在该州。16-17世纪,西班牙人和法国人先后来此。西班牙探险家看到落基山上彩色斑斓的岩石,遂将此地取名为“科罗拉多”,意为“红色的”。1803年美国通过科罗拉多州内共分64个郡。州府丹佛市(Denver),
